VCE CURRICULUM

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the certificate that the majority of students in Victoria receive on satisfactory completion of their secondary education. The VCE provides diverse pathways to further study or training at university or TAFE and to employment.

VCE Study Designs

Curriculum planning plays a key role in enabling schools to deliver the VCE to senior secondary students. Our study designs support effective curriculum planning for VCE studies.

High-achieving, interested and able students may consider including a study from the Higher Education Studies Program as part of their VCE. Access study designs, assessment handbooks, assessment advice and other teacher support materials.

ABOUT THE VCE VOCATIONAL MAJOR

The VCE Vocational Major (VM) is a vocational and applied learning program within the VCE designed to be completed over a minimum of two years. The VCE VM will give students greater choice and flexibility to pursue their strengths and interests and develop the skills and capabilities needed to succeed in further education, work and life.

It prepares students to move into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education and training, university (via non-ATAR pathways) or directly into the workforce. The purpose of the VCE VM is to provide students with the best opportunity to achieve their personal goals and aspirations in a rapidly changing world by:

  • equipping them with the skills, knowledge, values and capabilities to be active and informed citizens, lifelong learners and confident and creative individuals
  • empowering them to make informed decisions about the next stages of their lives through real-life workplace experiences.

HIGHER EDUCATION STUDIES IN THE VCE

The Higher Education Studies Program is offered by higher education institutions (universities) and the VCAA. Two types of study, Extension and Advanced Standing are offered through this program.

An Extension study is a first-year Higher Education study that is:

  • equivalent in content and assessment in every respect to one or more of current first-year Higher Education studies and constitutes at least 20 per cent of a full-time first-year university course
  • of a level for a high-achieving student and therefore is a clear advance on an identified VCE Unit 3 and 4 study and commensurate in workload with an additional VCE study
  • of a level that will normally allow the student, on successful completion, to proceed to second year study at the Higher Education institution in that discipline.

An Advanced Standing study is a first-year Higher Education study that is:

  • equivalent in content and assessment in every respect to one or more of current first- year Higher Education studies and constitutes at least 20 per cent of a full-time first-year course
  • is comprised of curriculum not available in any current VCE studies and therefore is not linked to any current VCE Unit 3 and 4 study
  • of a level that will normally allow the student, on successful completion, to proceed to second year study at the Higher Education institution in that discipline.
